"My husband and I have been married five years and we occasionally go to Mass on Sundays. I am now pregnant and was wondering if I can have my baby baptized if I am not a member of a parish and have not been going to Mass regularly."
The fact that parents have been going to Sunday Mass only occasionally does not exclude the parents from having their baby baptized. Having said this, however, it is vital to remember that baptism is not a magic act, but the beginning of a life in Christ. This requires nourishment in the Faith from the parents. This is a serious obligation on their part and is mentioned in the Rite of Baptism for Children. Since parental example in the future will largely influence the faith of their child, they are strongly encouraged to allow their child’s birth to be the beginning of a renewal of their faith and a recommitment to regular Mass attendance on Sundays and to Church membership. It is wise to discuss this matter with a priest or pastoral minister to get advice and support.
